Dans la nuit du 12 au 13 août 1961, le régime est-allemand érigea un mur dans l'ancienne capitale du Reich pour endiguer l'hémorragie de ses citoyens vers la RFA. Des familles furent déchirées et, au moment de sa destruction, en 1989, ce mur avait tué une centaine de personnes. Sa construction sembla cimenter l'ordre binaire de la Guerre froide et la division de l'Allemagne, mais il fut surtout la césure la plus profonde de l'histoire allemande entre 1945/49 et 1989/90. Cependant après quelques mois de colère et d'indignation, les nouvelles réalités provoquèrent une réorientation au sein de la classe politique occidentale, incitant Bonn à redéfinir ses rapports avec l'" autre Allemagne ". Celle-ci poursuivit ses efforts en vue de s'affirmer aux plans intérieur et extérieur. Le Mur mit fin à la crise de Berlin dans sa phase spectaculaire, mais il n'atténua guère la rivalité entre les deux Allemagnes qui s'installèrent à des degrés divers et de manière différente dans la division déclenchant un long processus de démarcation. Au début des années 1970, force était de constater que les divergences allaient croissant entre les projets politiques des uns et des autres, l'incompatibilité des structures sociales et les contrastes dans les usages linguistiques constituaient des frontières invisibles, tout comme les représentations culturelles qui se caractérisaient par des approches concurrentes. Ces éloignements politiques, sociétaux et culturels se trouvent à l'origine de l'Ostpolitik de Willy Brandt, lequel considéra que les deux États allemands ne pouvaient pas être étrangers l'un pour l'autre, si bien que leurs relations ne pouvaient que revêtir un caractère particulier. A partir des résultats de la recherche récente, cet ouvrage se propose d'analyser les spécificités d'une histoire intégrée des deux Allemagne caractérisée tout à la fois par des interdépendances et des démarcations.
